Strokes
Hi coaches,
I got a problem on my loop strokes. (both bh and fh) 1st, when i try to loop a backspin serve or chop from my opponent, my loop sometimes comes out as a drive which result to the falling of the ball and goes straight to the net. 2nd, my loop have limited speed. when i try to make it faster, it goes out of the table. 3rd, my team mates adviced me to brush the ball when looping (because they noticed that my loop turns out and become a drive). but i dont know how to brush the ball. is there any advice you can give me?
Hi Patrick,
Brushing the ball is the key to all of this. If you learn to brush the ball you will solve a lot of your problems.
By brushing, think about just touching the ball. Like if there is an insect on the ball that you are trying to brush off without hitting through the ball.
In our lessons on Serving Secrets we show you this principle.
Then to get more speed, you just make your stroke faster going through the same motion.

Is it harder to loop with a thinner rubber? I feel like the ball is penetrating too far and hitting the blade through the sponge too easily. In other words, it becomes more of a drive with less spin. My rubber is 1.8 mm by the way.
Hi Cam,
Yes the thicker sponges will allow you better spin. If you try a 2mm or 2.2mm sponge you will probably feel the difference.
