Coach,

I read that long pips reversed the spin. It did not explained what the player did action-wise. Did he push, chop or topspin it. My questions are: If he push a backspin serve what is the effect? If he chop a backspin serve, what is effect? Lastly, if he topspin a backspin serve what is the effect.

Thank you for explaining to me in detail.

Hi Rodrigo,

The type of stroke only effects the spin on the ball slightly because the long pimples don't grip the ball.

If he pushes or chops the backspin it will still come back with some topspin.  If he topspins the backspin it will have slightly more topspin on the ball when it comes back.

They give you a different reaction when the ball hits the rubber.  The short pimples flattens out the flight of the ball.  The long pimples slows the ball down and reverses the spin effect.

Coach,

If my opponent serves me a fast, long, low backhand and I block, push, topspin, and chop, what are the effects on this strokes?

If he serves with long pimples the ball will not have much spin so you can play all your strokes like there is no spin on the ball.

Coach,

How about if my opponent serves me with inverted/smooth surface paddle, what are the effects if I return it using backhand with long pips OX?
