Hi Alois and Jeff,

I've seen this video, and:

  • What is Chuan doing?(2:28). Is that a kind of lob?
  • What is Timo Boll doing?(2:38 and 2:46) Thanks a lot!

Hi Archel,

Chuan is doing a sidespin lob.

Boll is doing a sidespin topspin but if you notice he has changed hands and is using his right hand to play this shot.

The banana flick has become one of the most important returns in table tennis. It allows you to attack almost any short ball and places your opponent under immediate pressure. Still it is a difficult stroke that takes a lot of practice to master.

Isn't more effective just to use your backhand?

Usually it is but Timo likes to change hands sometimes and he is effective with it.
