Hi Samuel,

Lobbing is a skill that takes a lot of time to perfect.  It is a last resort shot and most of the time you will find that you will lose the point because the smasher is in a 90% winning position.

Work on the skill and you will get better at reading where the smash is coming.  If you can win one in ten rallies you are doing well.

At the mediocre club level, I find not many players lob the ball.  This often means there is a real opportunity if you can develop a decent lob.  Because not many players use it, there are many club level players who are quite strong in other parts of their game but who just can't smash lobs!  You can use therefore use the lob as a real weapon (assuming your club is large enough for you to get back up) up to a certain level.
