Hi Coach, :)

It's me again (Zul),

I would like to ask you, is it possible to hit / smash backspin ball?

I prefer to hit / smash / attack whenever the ball bounce with either greater or medium height and depth, (my buddies / opponents categorized myself as an attacker / aggressive player ;p) but I realize and admit that it is hard and difficult for me to hit / smash backspin ball.

I've watched and studied Joo Se Hyuk, I would say that he regularly use forehand and backhand chop that comes with heavy backspin to counter forehand / backhand attack of his opponents and yet his opponent(s) able to attack / smash the ball again. (Awesome and fantastic for both Joo and his opponent(s) )

Coach, need your advise and tips on this matter.

Thanks Coach,

Best Regards,

Zul (Malaysia)

Hi Zul,

When there is backspin on the ball it is better to make a topspin ball rather than a smash.  the topspin will help you to lift the ball over the net and get some consistency with your stroke.  If you try to smash the backspin ball you have a very small margin of error.  It is much safer to topspin.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
