Is it a topspin or just a forehand?

Strokes

Ok, I'm trying to master forehand topspin, watched your great videos, and I think I managed to do some topspins! But sometimes I thought it was just a very hard forehand counterhit. So how do I know if I really did a topspin?

Thanx so much=)

Hi,

Don't get too hung up with names.  All the forehand strokes are closely related to each other. Topspin etc is just names we give them.

The main thing to watch for when you are trying to do a topspin is that the ball is dipping. You can hit these flatter or thinner to get more dip or less dip. If this then becomes very flat it then becomes a counterhit. So you can see there is little difference.

The stroe production does not vary too much, so the fact you are unsure what type of stroke you are doing is probably a good thing. The contacts can change slightly. The more topspin you want the finer you contact the ball. The less topspin you want the flatter the contact.

Hope this clears it up for you.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.

Now it's clear for me, thank you! And I think the ball really dipped down, because I hit it with force and it still lands on the table, so that must be a topspin!
