Not able to smash

hi i am a right hand player. the problem is whenever i go to smash it goes wrong. every single time. i am not able to play it. forehand or backhand, it is almost impossible to smash. also i am not able to defend it if my opponent smashes. please help me.

Take a look at our lessons on both the Forehand Smash and the Backhand Smash for some really useful tips on the Smash strokes.

When someone is smashing to you the most appropriate response is to make the Lob shot.

IMO I wouldn't worry too much about defending smashes, it's better to focus on not making smashable returns (eventually you'd want to practice, but if you can't smash then there are other priorities).

Biggest thing that helped me was to recognize a high+short ball, and get into position to smash it right after the bounce. Learning to spot those easy-to-smash balls can really make a big difference against players who never attack.
