Strategy
Hi, i've been training table tennis for 5 years and I've decided to use anti-spin on my backhand, but I can't find tutorials for at least the basic strokes like there are for longpins. Any advice?
Hi Johann,
The first thing is to get the feel of its reaction to different spins.
For the basics:
• Against topspin: use a very firm block with a stable bat angle. Let the spin do the work.
• Against backspin: push forward gently. You need to add a little forward energy because the rubber gives you almost no grip.
• Against no-spin: This is the hardest ball. Use a controlled push or a soft roll, not a passive block as you will have to generate some speed of your own and the anti is very slow.
Key technical ideas:
• Keep the bat angle more open than inverted.
• Short strokes, early contact.
Training advice:
• Practice one spin type at a time. Ask your partner to feed only topspin, then only backspin.
• Focus on consistency and placement first.
• Use the anti mainly to set up your forehand attack.
Anti-spin is about patience and discipline. Once you can control the basics reliably, the disruption comes naturally.
This looks like a good topic for a new tutorial.
