I'm having trubble returning this serve. He's the best in the island for our age and its really annoying he will also do a side spin chop serve
Hi Oska,
You need to allow for the sidespin by watching the contact of the server. If the ball is long then you should attack it with your topspin. YOu need to allow slightly for the sidespin but if you brush heavily over the ball with your own topspin you will counteract a lot of their spin.
If the serve is short then have a relaxed hand and angle your bat away from where the abll wants to go.
We have a dedicated section to this on our Receiving Secrets course on our site.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
