Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for your question. It is a good one and the answer depends a lot on the individual and what stage of your career you are at. If you are just starting out and are really keen, then you should practice as much as you can. The key is to make sure that you are fully engaged for each session and giving 100%. If you are not focused during your training you are better off not doing it. However that doesn't mean at times you need to force yourself to focus. Remember that you need around 10,000 hours practice to reach world standard.

If you are older and already have 10,000 hours practice under your belt, you can afford to rest more and train less if that suits you. If you are still keen at this stage of your career you certainly can keep up the hard work and keep improving!

How often do you practice per week at the moment and how many years have you been playing Table Tennis?

 I train on: monday 1hr 30

                tuesday 2hrs

                wednesday 2hrs 30

                thursday 1hr shadow play

                friday 1hr shadow play

saturday at least 3hr 30 (sometimes get to stay longer                   at the sports centre, i sometimes stay for about 4hrs if                   im lucky and i have a mourning session on saturday)

                sunday at least 2hrs(same reason)

ive been playing for just over a 1yr and i won my county                  under 13s event, i got to the semi final of the under 15                  and lost to the person that won it

Wow Jimmy that sounds like a lot of training. And congratulations on your results so far.

I'm a little worried that you may be training too much but as I mentioned before, it really depends on the individual. If you are enjoying training that much and can really focus well all the time you are practicing then that is good. If you find that you feel you cannot practice 100% the whole time then you could easily drop a few hours.

Talk with your parents and coach and I'm sure you'll find the right balance.
