Strokes
Hi guys,
I'm usually able to play top-spin using both fore-hand and back-hand when the ball is at a comfortable height.
However, I find it very awkward if I get a ball on my backhand side, which is around shoulder-to-head height and is slow (for example, this may happen when someone returns my top spin).
What should be my position and technique for returning such a ball?
Hi Urvang,
Your best option is to step around quickly and make a forehand smash or topspin with this height of ball. Because the ball is higher it will give you enough time to step around.
How is it that a player can always seem to get back those extremely fast topspins? Is it their incredible anticipation? The key to good anticipation actually lies in tracking the ball well. When you watch the ball closely your peripheral vision will pick up your opponents movements and with lots of practice those signs will help you anticipate what your opponent is going to do. This happens naturally with lots of experience. So it it your job to ensure that you are tracking the ball really carefully.
