Forehand topspin consistency

Strokes

Hi coach!

I have some important matches the next weeks, i think in my game the thing gives more points to the oponent is my forehand topspin against a flat ball, I want to improve my consistency in that shot, I have a good topspin but it's still inconsistent.  I think i have trouble positioning when the ball is faster or when I'm a bit far from the table and the ball is slower, what is your advice about developing consistency in my topspin.  I dont need a topspin kill, just topspin drive but very consistency and kill the defence of the opponent with consistency and placement.

Thanks for your advice!

Hi Francisco,

The ball that comes through flatter and faster will feel like it has less topspin or even some backspin on it.  On this ball make the stroke more vertical to lift it over the net.

When you are further away from the table make sure you are moving into the ball and into a good position to hit the ball.  Often we hit the ball too far in front of the body on this ball.  You need to move in close enough to be able to hit the ball from closer to you.

Practice your topspin against these sorts of balls by getting someone to hit the ball like that.  So get them to hit the ball faster to you and try to topspin them.  Then position yourself further away from the table and get them to drop it shorter or slower.  Trying to replicate the situations is the best way to improve.

Relaxation: The Secret to More Power

In this video we show you a simple trick to improve your strokes by making them more economical. You'll notice increased power for less effort. When you tense your muscles too much you actually get less power and become more tired. However when you relax the opposite happens. It's why all the best players look like they are hitting the ball so hard without much effort.
