Forehand/backhand push with backspin

Strokes

I notice some players like Zhang Jike other pro players do a forehand/backhand push on short table rallies but I noticed that there is a backspin when they push the ball.

My question is how do I backspin the ball by just pushing it?

usually I do a short chop near the table to return it with backspin.

what should I do to practice this and apply it on an actual match.

Hi Raoul,

We have a number of lessons on the push stroke, and this one title The Push in Detail explains a lot of concepts including generating backspin on the ball. The key is to brush underneath the ball. You can think of this as a mini-chop if that helps.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
