I find it difficult to return serves which are aimed at my wide sides. The serves are generally fast and low with lot of spin. The backhand wide side serves pose more problem. May I request you to offer solution on this aspect.  Reference coaching videos may also please be mentioned.

Hi Ashoke,

Take a look at the tutorial we have on Returning wide angled serves.

The key to handling wide, fast, low, and spinny serves especially to the backhand is a mix of positioning, anticipation, and small technical adjustments.

  1. Positioning:
    • Stand slightly off-center toward your backhand if you expect wide serves there.
    • Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, ready to pivot.
  2. Short, controlled stroke:
    • Use a compact push or flick rather than a full swing.
    • Focus on brushing the ball to handle spin; avoid trying to smash it immediately.

I hope this helps you.

Returning Short Topspin Serves: Two Options

Returning a short topspin serve can be tricky because the spin wants to lift the ball up. In this video, we look at two effective options: developing an attacking flick and learning how to push the ball safely.

For the flick, the key is to be positive. Take a few risks, hit through the ball a little harder, and aim for a fast, flat contact. In practice, don’t worry too much about making mistakes as this is how you learn to control the shot under pressure.

The second option is the push. You can push a short topspin serve, but you need to adjust your contact. Instead of getting under the ball, come down the back of it more, almost feeling like your bat is moving slightly backwards. This helps counter the topspin and keeps the return lower and more controlled.
