Hi Coach,

Due to my age become old, I change to the defensive style and backhand is using the long pimple. However, when I face the strong player, I'm difficult to receive the long fast backhand side reverse backspin and no spin balls. Besides, I use forhand topspin from backhand side, how can I face it? Because when I cut the ball, the ball will easy become topspin or easy to go through the net. Do you think, I use backhand long pimple to attack or just keep cut it to wait the chance(it will be very passive)?

Thanks,

Jeffery

Hi Jeffrey,

You can hit the ball a little earlier with the pimple so that it gives them less time to react.  You can also get better at keeping the ball low with the long pimple which will make it slightly harder for them to attack.  Push the ball deep and fast to the corners and make sure you are hitting the ball to difficult places on the table for them wherever the are.

You can start to hit sometimes with it as well if you feel comfortable to do it.  Just open the face of the bat up to allow for the long pimples.  With practice you will be able to do it.

Tactics Against A Defensive Chopper

A chopper likes to get back from the table and get into a nice rhythm. If you keep the defender close to the table in the early part of the rally, it's hard for them to transition back into their chopping position. So keep the ball short on your serve and try and catch them unprepared. Watch the video to find out more great tactics to use against a defensive chopper.
