Counter attacking a chopper

Strategy

I have one opponent who chops long and chops deep with his backhand.  It is his stock way of returning almost anything.  I hate getting drawn into a reciprocal chopping game but invariably end up doing so.

What all are my options to win the point as soon as possible ? What techniques should I focus on mastering that can take him by surprise?

Thanks in advance,coach!

Hi Anand,

The best tactic is 3rd ball attack where you set up the attack with your serve.  Once you start pushing it becomes more difficult to transition into an attacking rally.

In our Master Classes we also have a lesson there for our Premium members on Third Ball Tips.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
