Strokes
Hello, I am having trouble blocking/returning slow but heavy spun loops. The ball is always going off the end of the table when I try to return. I try to close the face of my bat but can't seem to get it right! Thanks
Adam,
Thanks for the question.
The key to blocking spinny loops is to be quite firm with them. It is almost like you are punching them or giving them a short jab back on to the table. If you try to guide them the ball will often take off from the rubber and go long. You do still have to get the angle right of course but try to be a bit firmer with them and punch through the ball.
The other important factor is getting in the right position. Because the spinny loops often travel a bit slower they don't tend to come through to you. You may need to move a little forward into the ball or get your body closer to the bounce of the ball.
Good luck. Let us know if this helps.
A great weapon is being able to vary the amount of speed and spin on your forehand topspin stroke. By making your stroke more vertical and brushing the ball finely, you can generate more spin. For more speed you need to swing more horizontally.

I'm also having trouble blocking this. I can block them once, maybe twice, but as they return with even more spin, no matter how closed my racket, the ball eventually flies off the table. I feel that if I punch into it, this makes it worse.
Hi Rohan,
We now have a lesson on this. Take a look at our lesson on Counter a Slow Spinny Topspin. I think this will help you. If you have any problems with it let me know.
