Yes it is best to wait for the shorter ball. Otherwise it is better to smash the ball.

The short ball must be a oportunity to finish the point, because if you smash it you can do it extremely hard and with a good direction, and if you do a drop shot, you can do a really short drop. Otherwise, a long lob dont allow you to hit the ball to hard or drop it to short without to much height.
