Hi coach,

I don’t have a table tennis rule book.

if I held a tournament using orange colored balls instead of white balls as a tournament organizer, the tournament will not be sanctioned by the international table tennis federation and/or similar organizations?

Is it illegal to use orange balls in a tournament?I know that a white ball is used in a match in almost all tournaments.

Nittaku sells I.T.T.F. Approved orange balls.

Is it illegal to use orange-colored balls in a tournament?

Personally I prefer orange to white simply because I can see the ball better.

Hi Ken,

You are allowed to use the orange balls in official tournaments.  It is just that most tournaments use white at the moment.

The Rule states:

2.3 THE BALL

  1. 2.3.1  The ball shall be spherical, with a diameter of 40mm.

  2. 2.3.2  The ball shall weigh 2.7g.

  3. 2.3.3  The ball shall be made of plastic material and shall be white or orange, and matt.

Here is a link to the ITTF Handbook which includes the rules. ITTF Handbook
