Is holding the bat vertically or horizantally better for a backspin serve?

Hi Ryan,
It is better to have you bat more horizontal to be able to brush the bottom of the ball. You can generate backspin with the bat more vertical but it is harder to get the brushing action.

Varying the speed is different from varying the length. You can have a fast short serve and a slow short serve. You can also have a fast long serve and a slow long serve.
