Strokes
Hi Alois and Jeff,
my backhand topspin of late has become very inconsistent. i am currently trying out new strokes for it and i was wondering whether you need to snap your wrist around the ball when playing the stroke?
i try the snap all the time but it often misses. can you please give me some advice on how to improve it?
also can also tell me a bit about the bat's angle?
much appreciated,
Shripathi
Hi Shripathi,
The wrist snap will help you to develop more spin on the ball. To start with you can forget about the wrist and get the action of the arm correct.
This is an important principle of learning anything. Start with a simple stroke and then you can add parts to it.
Think first about the direction of your bat like we show you in all of our lessons. The extra wrist can come once you become more relaxed and fluent with the stroke.
The bat angle also doesn't need to change during your stroke initially. The angle will depend on the amount of spin on the ball. The more topspin on the ball you are receiving the more you can come over the ball. The more backspin the more you can open the angle of your bat.
Make sure you take a good look at our lesson on the Backhand Topspin.
