Backhand Topspin

Strokes

Hi PingSkills,

It is difficult for me to control the ball in a backhand topspin using the snapping action of the wrist. I've had some amount of success playing it by just the down to up motion of the arm (without using the wrist). So is this in any coaching manual or should I just drop it and practice the usual stroke involving the wrist?

 Thanks!

Hi Viki,

To start with it is OK to not use your wrist too much.  This will give you more control.  The wrist will add speed and spin to the stroke.  It is a stage of development of the stroke.  When you feel comfortable getting the ball on the table with the control stroke then you can add the wrist action.
