Backhand topspin

Strokes

Hi Alois and Jeff,

In your backhand topspin video, Jeff makes the shot look simple. From my experience though, it is anything but! I have tried it, and I just cant get the timing right. My success rate is very low! Any suggestions? How hard should I have to hit the ball as well? From your video, it looks as though Jeff is almost hitting winners? I can hit a backhand winner that has air, but attacking anything on my backhand that is below net height is tough for me! Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Simon,

Good players always make things look simple.

One of the keys is that you try to keep the stroke as simple as possible.  Keep the stroke in a straight line to start with.  This will eliminate errors.  Also make sure you are putting spin on the ball by getting a good brushing contact on the ball.  This will help you to lift the ball when it is lower and it will also allow you to hit the ball harder because the topspin will bring the ball down when it is traveling fast.

Keep practicing the stroke.  It will get better with time and focused practice.
