Hello. I was wondering about the backhand sidespin flick, whether it is used to generate sidespin, or attack a sidespin ball. In the video on youtube here, you mentioned that it is used to attack short serves.

Can you please explain it a bit further?

Thank you.

Hi Christian,

Yes it is used for the shorter ball.  You can use it against sidespin, backspin or topspin serves.  Usually against the backspin because it is useful for lifting the backspin over the net.

Forehand Topspin Variations

A great weapon is being able to vary the amount of speed and spin on your forehand topspin stroke. By making your stroke more vertical and brushing the ball finely, you can generate more spin. For more speed you need to swing more horizontally.

Which is better for lifting a backspin ball? More focus on sidespin or more on topspin?

The sidespin actually makes it slightly easier to lift the backspin and easier to get under the ball.
