how do I perfect my backhand?

Hi Amir,

The simple answer is to practice, practice, practice. I suggest you start by taking a look at our video lesson on the backhand counterhit.

You need to remember the following basic points.

  • You should be facing exactly where you want the ball to go
  • The stroke starts in front of your body with your bat flat
  • The stroke finishes with your arm extended, your palm facing the ceiling and your bat at around shoulder to head high

Start slowly and try to hit a few shots in a row on the table. Then gradually work your way up to 10, then 20. You need to gain some consistency in practice so that you can be comfortable when playing the backhand in a match.

We should face the direction in which we want the ball to go.  But I have also read that we should be facing the opponent in the line of play.  This basically means the rally will have to be along the same direction back and forth!  Then how to change direction to place the ball?

Yes this is a guide.  As long as you are facing towards the table then you can use your wrist to change direction slightly.
