Backhand block to fast topspin

Strokes

I find it hard to execute a decent block with my backhand when the topspins become faster. Often it isn't a stroke at all - I just manage to hold my bat in the path of the ball. This does not allow me to put any pressure in it. The ball comes back very convenient for the next topspin by my opponent.

How can I improve my game in this respect?

Thanks

Hi Claus,

This is a matter of seeing the ball early enough to make a stroke.  This can be improved by being able to watch the ball more closely.  If you are watching the ball well you may pick up the direction just s fraction of a second earlier.  It doesn't take much time to make a big difference in what you are able to do.

You also need to hit against faster balls more often as this will improve your ability to see the ball earlier and also not stress when you see the ball coming at speed.  This relaxation will also help you to react quicker and more efficiently.

If you can during training get someone to topspin the ball anywhere on the table to you while you block the ball back to one position.  Start off slowly and as you get more comfortable you can get them to increase the speed.
