Hi, can you please explain what they mean when they say he is a  a 1500 or a 2000 player.

Hi Ron,

This is a USTTA rating that people are referring to.

Perhaps someone who is in the sysytem could explain more on the relative standards. 

A Rating for:

a beginner who is playing their first tournament
a player who has played for a year
a player at high club level
a player at State level
a player in the National team

Beginners playing their first tournaments will usually have ratings below 1000.  An average club player (at the club I belong to) probably has a rating around 1500.

The USATT moved their site a few years ago and so the link changed.  Here's a current link to a chart showing the distribution of ratings among USATT members.
