Weak backhand

Strokes

Hey coaches, i currently have a stronger forehand than my backhand. I don't really loop with my backhand and usually pivot often to cover it. This led to errors in my play. Even when receiving a long side top serve to my backhand i try to counter it but the ball goes to the net. Do i need to brush the ball or just follow through more?

Hi Jack,

It sounds like you need to just brush the ball a little more and have more of a vertical stroke. This will lift the ball higher.

It could also be that you aren't making good position to make the stroke.

See if you can focus on these two things and see if the stroke improves.

Maybe that's why. I don't really get much brush on my backhand strokes. The angle of the bat needs to be closed right?

No, I would open the angle more so that you brush up the back of the ball and lift it higher.

can i also make a suggestion, you say you are receiving a side/top serve, so i think also you should watch for the amount of curve on the flight of the ball and also watch for when the ball bounces it may kick sideways a bit due to the side on the serve. also if the ball does curve and there is obviously a lot of sidespin there it means there isnt as much topspin, and sidespin does make the ball stay low, almost like backspin.

The concept applies to the forehand too right. Just brush the ball more.

Hi Jack,

Yes the same applies on both sides.
