Hi coaches!

Recently, I loss to a guy who serves very fast long serves to the corners. In his serves sometimes there are little backspin, sometimes no spin. When he serves, he uses flat ball contact. Most of my counter hits  touched to the net. How to receive such serves?

Hi Ardak,

The flat faster serves will feel like they have more backspin on them so you need to lift the ball more.

Take a look at this Options Against a Long Backspin Serve.  In the Ask the Coach video responses there are also a couple of Premium responses that would help... Flat long serve and Long, fast serve with lot of back spin.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.

Thank you coach!

I have the same problem. For me, that kind of serves are very fast to topspin it too. As you said, I will try to use more wrist movement to brush and lift the ball.
