Using a newly learned skill during a match

Training

I've become somewhat consistent with my sidespin flick and am eager to try it out during a match, however there's this lingering fear to use it because my ability to read the spin on the ball is rather poor. In my club, we often play doubles and I feel like such a letdown for my teammate whenever I fail to execute the stroke. Any advice would be gladly appreciated c:

Hi Jack,

This is a great problem to have.  It means you are learning something new.

The execution into a match is a matter of degrees.  Start by challenging yourself more in the training situation.  When practising set up some scoring system for yourself where you score a point if you make the flick in a training drill and lose 2 points if you miss.  This starts to add some pressure to yourself to make the shot.  Get it to the situation where you are feeling similar to how you feel in a match or if you are playing doubles and feel a pressure to make the shot.

The more you do this the better you will be at making the shot in a pressure situation and will be able to translate that into a match.

#25 - Serving with Spin

You get plenty of opportunity to practice serving with spin in this week's training plan. We change the normal routine slightly by not having a dedicated serving time at the end of the session. Instead we focus on and practice the serve through most of the exercises. This is an important part of Table Tennis so put a lot of effort into this session.

Thanks for the advice! Tried this method today and actually managed to become comfortable with executing the stroke (:
