Upsetting a higher level player

I often play events where I'm playing much higher rated players.  I have chosen this approach because I can't lose any rating points and I'm hoping to get a bit lucky and upset a higher level player.  I play an offensive loop attack game.  I'm tall and lanky and I am good at returning balls that are hard to get to.

My little Story:

I played an advanced player once and almost beat him (lost by 4 total points)11-3  12-10,  11-13,  11-9.  He was 600 rating points higher than me.  I was able to take advantage of the moment though.  He had just finished playing the hardbat champ of the U.S. and losing to him.  He arrogantly exclaimed to me "Psssh.  I should have won that match!"  He pressured me at bit during warmups to start playing early (even though I was sitting cold and needed the full 2 minutes).  Then he said to me, "You won't win this match!"  I was pissed! I used the psychology to my advantage.  I gave him low short serves to the FH and he tried to flip them & he missed which frustrated him.  He also was slow to attack which I took advantage of by taking the initiative to attack first.  This was the first time I'd ever even won a game on an advanced level player like him.  It was fun!  I felt I won even though I lost.  Not many players have ever even challenged these high level guys in tournaments.  They are just so much better than all of us.

So my goal is to pull off an upset!

Hi,

That is a good story and shows what is possible when you use the right tactics against a better player.

Keep working hard and you will not only pull off an upset but you will reach the level where you are consistently beating players of that level.

I tis also important to play players at your same level because you need to learn how to control your emotions in this situation as well and learn how to close out matches.

"the best defence is offence"

Service variation + second ball attack = point (bigger chances of having a point than waiting for your opponent to attack)

especially when your playing with a better player. Attacking first breaks your opponents momentum and turning him to a defensive player (if not counter attack) perfect your service variations (how to trick your opponent ) and a "one blow" like super smash! FLAT DRIVE is harder to counter that a SPIN DRIVE coz it is a dead ball with extreme speed.... "my own opinion" :-)
