Unfair Opponent

Rules

Hi Pingskills,

A while ago I played in a local tournament that really bothered me because I went up against a very unsportsmanlike opponent. He would always say the ball skimmed the edge when it clearly missed the table! We had no umpire as it was in the early stage of the tournament. I ended up winning the series but still gave him a couple of points because he kept insisting that the ball skimmed the table. When I actually fought for more game deciding points he gave me the (rightfully earned) point because I wouldn't give in either. His attitude alone changed my composure and performance throughout the tournament which really irritated me. How do I deal with players like these mentally. Thanks.

Looking back I really should've called for an umpire but I can't do much now.

Hi John,

I think your final suggestion is the best one.  It is probably best to call for an umpire if there are any issues.  Unfortunately every now and then you do get players who will push the limits and try to take points that they haven't earned.  In the long run though they are only cheating themselves because they aren't getting the results they deserve.

Luckily though most players are very honest.
