Unable to hit top spin/loop against better players in match

Hi Coach,

I am facing one problem in my matches.I hit my top spin/loop well in practice and also in matches but against the lower level players. But When some better players come against me, my percentage of looping/Top spin reduces or mostly goes on net or out.

And if one or two shots does not work then i loose my whole confidence and chock in the match and forget all the things which i practiced.

Please suggest.

Hi Kapil,

It sounds like you are tightening up at the thought of playing better players.  Try to remain relaxed with your shots and allow yourself to react and adjust.  It may just be that they are too fast for you and that is OK.  With more practice you will be able to react faster.  However you can make some improvement by remaining relaxed.

See where the tightness is happening.  It usually starts with the fingers and the shoulder area and perhaps the legs also stop moving as well.

There is one simple way that you can try.  Whenever you feel that you are getting tight, close your eye, take a deep breath and then focus on what you need to do for the next point.  If you are serving, think about where you are going to serve and what type of serve you are going to do.

The more you do this, the better you will get at it.
