Hello PingSkills,

I find pushing short balls very manageable but when the ball is long, I lack room to get the movement of the arm right. To avert this, should I move back so that I can create the required space to get the arm movement right? Also, I find it very difficult to push the balls which are slightly towards my forehand and end up playing an awkward backhand. Could you also give me a rough idea about how to decide between my backhand and forehand push?

Cool website and thanks in advance.

Hi Viki,

This is a common question and you have answered it pretty well yourself. Yes you should try to give yourself a bit more room to play the shot. If the ball comes to your middle it can be difficult to decide whether to play a backhand or a forehand. If it is a little on your forehand side then generally you are better playing the forehand push and the same for the backhand. If it is right in the middle then use which ever side you prefer and move into position so you can play it. You can practice this by asking your partner to try and push balls into your middle. That way you get used to moving into position. So basically footwork is the key so you get into a good position to play the push.

The last thing I would like to say is that if you are aiming to develop your game you should start learning how to play a Forehand Loop Off Backspin. As you get better you want to attack any long balls as this will put you on the offensive and give you the best chance of winning the point.

Good luck!
