The other important one is actually playing matches. You also need to develop your mental ability to play well in a match situation. Having great strokes is important but if you can't use them when you really need them, is frustrating.
Pushing short is a great option but you need variation in your game. When you push the ball long you want to make sure it is fast to try and get your opponent's out of position. Watch this video for some tips on how to play the fast long push with heaps of backspin.
