Touching the ball twice

Hi coach,

The other day while playing a doubles match, one of opponents hit the ball twice (actually the ball hit the two different part of his bat very rapidly while swinging once)and the ball bounced on my side of the table. He said that it was illegal to hit the ball twice, so he said that he lost the point. But I said that it is legal to hit the ball twice accidentally.

Such a rare accident happened to me once or twice in the past during some matches.

Is it legal to hit the ball twice accidentally?

Hi Ken,

It is acceptable to touch the ball twice as long as it is one swing and not deliberate.

It often happens that the ball will touch the racket and your hand on the swing, this is still considered a good shot.

Hitting the Ceiling

When the ball hits the ceiling the point is over. You must hit the ball directly back onto the table otherwise you lose the point. In International tournaments the roof needs to be at least 5 metres above the playing surface but in local competitions you might often encounter much lower ceilings.
