I've been wondering as to how I can add topspin or backspin while doing a side spin pendulum ball as when ever I do my pendulum service it is extremely random backspin with the server

Hi Shane,

Think of it as adding a little backspin or sidespin with your sidespin serve.  You don't have to generate pure backspin or topspin.

For our Premium members we have just filmed and released a new Pendulum Serve lesson which shows all of this really clearly.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.

so with a pendulum serve how would I add back spin to the ball with side spin?

If you think of the ball as a clock face, then hit the ball qt 7 o'clock.  This will give you the backspin and the sidespin.
