Hi alois and jeff,

During a practice session, i can play up to a max of 50-60 counterhits non stop but for forehand topspin, i havent crossed the second ball. My first topspin is strong but i always miss the second one and feel the ball is aprroaching me very fast and often get the ball too high into the air and miss. How can i become more consistent in my practice sessions? ive been playing for over a year and have had a consistent fh but now i literally struggle for the second ball.

Also i developed a bad habit of swinging parabolically over the ball often missing ball contact. how do i regain my natural habit to swing in a straight diagonal line?

Hi Shripathi,

It sounds like you are trying too hard.  With the topspin let your arm relax and swing through naturally.  Think about your start and finish positions as we always stress.

While you are playing topspins try to remain balanced throughout the stroke even after the stroke is finished.  This will allow you to make the next stroke a little easier.  This will also help you to make your stroke straight rather than parabolic.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
