Hi Alois

When i watched timo boll plays with chinese (ma long,xu xin, etc) i was confused.

Timo always opening his game with such a spinny forehand topspin (the ball was slow but i think it's very spinny) and the chinese counter his topspin with powerful strokes (i didn't know if that was stroke or strong forehand topspin because i can't see it clearly)

If the chinese can get the point from countering timo's topspin with such a power like that, why timo always do the same thing  when he knows that chinese will beaten him up like that? what is the main purpose from his strategies with do the topspin like that?

Hi Adrian,

He may not have had many other options. Perhaps the other player was playing such an effective push that it only left him with the option of making that slower topspin.

Sometimes too, players think that if they continue with the same tactic the other player will start to miss.  If they believe that under a little more pressure the stroke will start to break down, you may keep going with the tactic.

It is my impression that there is not much that can be done to prevent the top chinese from attacking anyway.

It is Timo's style of play. His topspin shots are executed with less raw power than many of the chinese players use, but they have lots of forward spin.

There are some (admittedly extreme) examples for this. Watch what happenes when Wang Liquin tries to return the topspin.

i think the first video is side spin, not top spinrnrnyeah, timo boll is such a good player, the only european that have beaten chinese many times was him. in the second video,he touches the ball perfectly and makes the extreme top spin.

I disagree - I think it's mostly topspin

Because top players have excellent control they can handle the faster rubbers and still maintain amazing consistency.
