Thumb Position for Shakehand Grip

Strokes

Hi Alois:

I had a question about where the correct placement of my thumb should be during my backhand stroke.  Currently I position my thumb so it is pointed almost straight up on the rubber, parallel to the blade handle.  I switch my thumbs position back to perpendicular when I use my forehand so I don't accidentally hit it.  I know changing my grip is horrible during play so my question is where should the thumb be placed in the grip and do you have any tips on how to more quickly unlearn my bad habit and reinforce the new one?

 Thanks!

Hi James,

Try to keep your thumb in the same position as you would with the forehand.

One way of increasing awareness of your thumb is to put a coin under your thumb and play with it.  If you move your thumb you will drop the coin.
