Strategy
Hi
I was playing the other day and my coach told me to time my block so that I hit the ball as soon as the ball bounces from my side and to stand close to the table, even when counterlooping. When I watch the people on the national teams play, I realise that they all stay far away from the table when blocking and looping.
So I was wondering, how far from the table should I stand when I am playing? Should I listen to my coach or should I copy the professionals?
Hi Oliver,
The professionals only move away from the table when they need to.
You should try to stay close to the table as much as possible because that cuts down the time that your opponent has.
When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
