Hi Alois

I remember you commenting on a few occasions that we need more defensive players around.  So, in the spirit of broadening my horizons, I am currently trialing a LP/inverted combination.  I watched your video on backhand chop and Jeff hits with both inverted AND LP and you note that LP makes it easier to control the chop.  However, the video did not make it clear if the actual technique of chopping changed when you used the LP.  Could you clarify what is different about the technique of LP chopping? (both for the FH and BH)

Thanks!

Hi Ji-Soo,

The main thing with the Long Pimples is that it absorbs some of the spin and speed when defending and makes it easier to control the ball.

Since the rubber is a little slower you need to have more of a horizontal stroke, so moving the bat forward towards the table.  The faster the rubber the more vertical the stroke can be because you don't need to generate as much forward momentum.  The slower the rubber the more forward momentum you need to generate.  This applies to both the forehand and backhand.

It will be interesting to see what you gain from having a go at defending.  I played a year with short pimples and after that found it very liberating when I went back to inverted rubber on my backhand.  I think it 'freed' my backhand somewhat.

Good luck with the project.

Thanks very much for the advice.

I've had about 8 sessions with the new combination and it has been both frustrating and a lot of fun.  As is probably apparent, I love over-analysing and over-strategising everything in table tennis, and having inverted on one side and LP on the other has given me twice as much to think about!!!  I can't wait till I can twiddle so I have even more possibilities to consider.

I've thought about throwing in the towel numerous times, but am perservering.  One interesting thing I've found is that having LP on my backhand has improved my inverted FH.  To be competitive with LP I'm going to have to learn how to chop with it - and I'll keep your advice in mind for next time.

Cheers

I was told that the LP(long pimples) tends to have different effect

comparing to inverted rubbers.  They are just opposite to the inverted.  For example: if your opponant, holding LP chops back to you from your back spin ball(you are using inverted), you will receive a top spin ball instead of a back spin.   I have tried to verify that in playing and it seems to be true.

Would you commet on that, especially in regards to LP\'s other effects?  I just cannot understand the physics of it.
