Dear Sir,

I have started to take table tennis lessons about a year ago. I am 43, tall (6ft4in) and lean. I am making some progress but would like to move faster. What exercises can you recommend that can help?

My biggest weakness so far is footwork - i stay in more or less one place and do not move.

Second weakness is receiving the serve of the opponent - i return easy balls and get attacked.

Hi Andrey,

Being so tall it is important to use your legs and get down as low as possible.

Take a look through our lesson on the Basic Stance.  Then watch the lesson on the Footwork Basics.  As a Premium member you will also be able to watch the lesson on Leg Position.

Once you get the feeling for your leg position and also the basic movement then try to do as many footwork drills as you can.  Take a look at the Training Drills that we have for you.  Choose some of them and practice them to work on your footwork.

For the second problem on receiving serves, again as a Premium member you can access the Receiving Secrets lessons.  Work your way through these lessons and I think you will gain a better understanding of how to deal with serves.

If you have any other queries with it once you have looked through the lessons, please let me know.
