Hi John,

The idea is that they hit the ball very flat and find it difficult to generate topspin on the ball.

It is good to play with backspin and a lot of topspin against it.  It is difficult for a hard bat player to lift the backspin and it is also difficult for them to control the heavy topspin unless they chop it.

Because they can't topspin you can also take your time to attack.  Be patient.

We will cover this in one of our lessons in our Match Strategy lessons which will be starting soon.

Gerada v Lu

Once again Alois and Jeff discuss a great match from the PingSkills Classic. This is the first quarter final between the number 1 seed Simon Gerada and Percy Lu. Without giving too much away, just make sure you watch the incredible backhand that Percy Lu hits in the 4th set. It really is the shot of the tournament.

A hard bat is a bat that doesn't have any sponge under the rubber and the rubber is a very short pimple.  These bats can often be found in sports stores.  They are limited in what they can do as far as spin and control of the ball but if used correctly can be awkward to play.

You can look at the bat before the game.  It will also make a very loud sound when there is no sponge.
