Is it advantageous to keep close to the table during a rally?
Hi Paul,
In general it is better to stay closer to the table. It means that yo have less distance to cover laterally and also your opponent has less time to react to the next shot.
However some players like to stay a little further away from the table to give themselves more time with their strokes. Players that play with more spin and have bigger strokes fall into this category.
Also some players like to play slower shots tactically.
When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
