Hi Guys,

First of all thanks on the tips.

When i am returning serve i struggle to attack long sidespin topspin to my backhand.I try to step around and use my forehand topspin which is my stronger stroke but the ball usually goes off the end the same thing happens with my backhand topspin.

Thanks

Hi Laurence,

There are two things working here the speed of the ball and the topspin.  That is probably why the ball is going off the end.

Try to brush over the top of your return a lot more.  You don't have to hit the ball hard to start with.  Just a gentle topspin or even a counterhit with your bat having a closed angle should do the trick.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
