Sidespin on a backspin

Hi Alois,

I have consulted the sidespin topspin video many times. I have observed that you are hitting a sidespin topspin on a return counter stroke. I mean that Jeff starts with a counter and then you hit a sidespin topspin on that. I have tried the same with a backspin return.

I am left hander. The hook sidespin topspin shot works if I bend a lot and lift the ball up with a high follow through action. But it is really difficult to do the same for a fadeout sidespin topspin because the sidespin drag takes the ball towards left (mostly out of the table) and it does not dips much. Further, it is really difficult to make a proper contact with the ball while having the racquet head up (for a fadeout stroke). Can you share some additional tips which would be helpful in practicing the fadeout topspin against the backspin serve/return.

I would appreciate if you can guide on how/when to contact the ball (having a heavy backspin) when putting a fadeout  topspin.

Also, I think that I have a best chance to land the ball with this stroke correctly if I hit a forehand fadeout from my backhand position. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Regards,

Mudit

Hi Mudit,

Sounds like you are trying to perform some tricky manoeuvres. It is difficult to get the bat back far enough to make this fadeaway topspin off backspin.  Try bending lower with your body to get below the ball.  Also bend your wrist back as far as possible, trying to touch the back of your hand towards your wrist.

Don't forget that a straight topspin can be very effective and also is a much safer stroke.
