Hi Alois,

Just wanna clarify sth on sidespin.

Is sidespin Go to the number 3) point with the topic sidespin

OR

2) We brush across the 9' o clock to 3'o clock surface of the ball, meaning like a forehand pendulum serve?

Hi JinMeng,

Sidespin is anything that makes the ball spin sideways.  You can do this by brushing across the back of the ball or the side of the ball.

IS point number 3, where the ball is brushed at the bottom counted as sidespin?

Hi JinMeng,

As Alois said the only thing you need to really know is that if you get the ball spinning sideways, then it has sidespin. You can do this by brushing the side of the ball (which I think you are referring to as 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. You can also brush across the back of the ball as this will also get the ball spinning sideways.

Thank you. Yup I understand this sidespin. However, I am unsure if brushing the ball underneath in a right to left motion or vice versa is counted as sidespin?? This is because the ball rotation is different from the one you mentioned (brushing the back and side of the ball). Is that still sidespin? many thanks.

If you brush underneath in a right to left motion it is hard to get any forward momentum on the ball. Therefore you normally need to brush forwards to make the ball go over the net. Hence you might have backspin and sidespin on the ball.

I think that some people refer to the spin you are describing as corkscrew spin. It is very rare to see this in a match situation.

Thank you. Normally for the backhand serve, where it could be sidespin/topspin or sidespin/backspin, for the sidespin component itself, do we brush it at the bottom across from left to right/right to left OR do we brush across the back of the ball? For the sidespin component.

You can do either.  The more under the ball you get the slower the ball will go.

You need to try this for yourself. Grab the ball in your hand and bring your bat through for your serve on different angles and see how it might affect the ball. With a little experimenting you will soon work it out.

Generally I try to come underneath and across for a backhand backspin and sidespin serve and up the back of the ball and across for a topspin sidespin.
