Side spin Generation

Strokes

Hey guys,

I play table tennis for fun, and I love it. I was just wondering how to generate side spin in a rally using the shake hand grip. Personally, I find it very hard to do so mainly because of the fact that there is hardly any possible wrist action using the shake hand grip. I can execute side spin in a rally around 1 out of 5 times, and I would like to improve that. If you have any tips, could you please let me know.

P.S Your videos are great, they help a lot

Cheers,

Xavier

Hi Xavier,

You are right it is a bit more difficult with the shakehand grip to generate sidespin.  The key is to drop or raise your wrist when you are playing the shot.  This will get you to contact the ball more on the side which will generate the sidespin.  If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the lesson on the Sidespin Forehand Topspin.

Enjoy.

Thanks a ton Alois. This helped a lot. What I was trying to do to get more side spin was alter my grip mid-rally, but this takes too long. When I say alter my grip, I mean like when I serve, how I hold the rubber, and not the bat handle. This is much more effective and consistent thought. Thanks!
