Hi, Pingskills

For quite some time I have been practising side spin flick, and sometimes it works, but, I still have some issues. As far as I understood, it can be used to return every type of side spin serve. My question  is: when is the proper time to hit the ball: right off the bounce, on the top of the bounce, or something else, and another thing, where is the contact point, is it frontal part of the ball, or the left side, because I am right handed player?

Hi Pedja,

This is a very advanced stroke that the top players make look very easy.

You can hit it as the ball is rising or at the top of the bounce.  You come around the left aide of the ball for a right hander.  This gives the sidespin.  Take a look at the lesson on the Backhand Sidespin Flick.

Thank you. The reason I asked this is following: there is a guy who serves tomahawk serve. He is right handed, and the ball goes to my backhand side, curving towards my right side, that is, forehand side. I am struggling with the return. Beside the flick, what are other options against that serve, how to put my blade to defend that serve, to keep it shorter and lower?

Hi Pedja,

You can simply push or flick the ball.  It is probably easier to do this with your backhand because of the angle of the serve and the spin.  Face your bat to your right.  The amount will depend on the amount of sidespin he is putting on the ball.
